Title: Two Steps Forward, one Step Back
Character/Pairing: Luka Kovac
Prompt: General Bonus 01: Twilight

Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers to Season 14's 300 Patients
Summary: Niko tries to get Luka to open up about what happened in Chicago, and instead reopens old wounds.

"You want a beer?" Niko nudged the door open with his elbow before stepping out onto the porch, then offered the bottle to his brother.

"Thanks." Luka took the offered drink with little enthusiasm.

"Did you put Joe to bed already?" Without waiting for an invitation, Niko took a seat on the step below where his younger brother sat, deliberately avoiding eye contact with him in the process.

"Yeah, he was worn out." He took a pull off the bottle before picking at the label with his thumbnail.

"It's starting to cool off, going to have to get out heavier coats." Following suit, Niko took a drink off his own bottle before shaking his head.

"I don't want to talk about the weather, Luka." He released a quiet sigh before continuing.

"Are you going to tell me what happened in Chicago, why Abby didn't come back with you? She's your wife, Luka, she should be here, it insults Tata that she isn't." Niko's words held the slap of emotions held back too long.

"Don't start, Niko, this isn't any of your business." Luka pushed himself up out of the chair he was sitting in with enough force that it slid backward, struck the wall and tipped over but, he paid it no mind.

"What, you're going to run away again, like with Danijela?" If Niko had meant for his words to sting, they served their purpose, and Luka whirled on him, his silhouette now framed with the twilight sky as his backdrop.

"This has nothing to do with Danijela, I can't believe you even went there." With a wave of his hand to indicate he was through with the argument, Luka stormed back up the steps and into their father's house, letting the door slam behind him. Both men knew the argument was far from over, it had been years in the making, with heated words thrown on both sides, two steps forward, one step back, the healing would come with time.

Title: Mama's Gone
Character/Pairing: Luka and Josip "Joe" Kovac
Prompt:General Bonus 004: Tomorrow
Word Count: 288

Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers to Season 14 "300 Patients"
Summary: Luka helps Joe cope with Abby's absence

"Mama..." It wasn't the first time that day that his son had asked for his mother, and as Luka hoisted him to his shoulder he could do little more then comfort the boy as he waited for him to adjust to her absence.

"Mama's not here, Joe...I'm sorry." Luka rubbed the small boy's back as he carried him through the quiet house. How did he even begin to explain all that was happening? Never-mind that there was so much here for him to get used to, and it wasn't just not having his mother when he called for her. It was the unfamiliar language, all the new people he was meeting, and being away from everything he knew as well.

"Mama..." The small boy's voice broke as his tears finally began, and his father tightened his hold on him, bringing his full attention back to comforting his son.

"I know you miss her, Joe, and I wish she was here but, she can't come right now." There was no way he could explain to Joe what Abby was going through, anymore than she'd been able to explain his absence, all he could do was distract him.

"How about we go outside, you want to play with your ball?" He offered the distraction as he grabbed the toy and handed it to the child as he carried him.

"Ba." As he saw the toy, Joe reached for it, the absence of his mother temporarily forgotten. It wasn't an ideal solution, but it would do for now, and tonight, or tomorrow, when Joe again asked for his mother he would find some other way to handle things. Until they were once more a family, they had no choice.

Title: Hard To Say Good-bye

Summary: Luka tries to come to terms with a life without his family.

"Tata? Why are you still there? We're waiting for you, Tata, aren't you coming with us?" Luka reached out to his young daughter as she called to him, trying to catch her hand in his before she turned away.

"Wait, Jasna, wait for me, Tata's coming." Without a thought he lunged for the small girl as she started to move away, only to find himself rudely pulled from the dream as he sprawled on the floor beside the cot he now claimed as his bed, his daughter nowhere in sight. Releasing an anguished groan, Luka buried his face in his arms, that which had only moments before been so real, now clearly nothing more than another dream.

She wasn't here, none of them were, the reality struck with a clarity that immediately brought tears with it, and for several minutes he could only lay there on the rough wooden floor and grieve for their losses.

"Luka, are you all right?" The voice preceded the rap on the door, and even as the question was asked, he knew the man outside wouldn't dare enter before permission was given.

'No, yes, I don't know." Brushing away the betraying tears, he climbed to his feet and turned the knob on the door, opening it only enough that it would signal his consent and nothing more before he went back to sit on the bed.

"I brought you some soup." Easing the door fully open, the older man entered, a mug, wrapped in a towel in his free hand.

"I don't want anything." Unwilling to look at him, Luka dropped his eyes to his hands, the hands that had failed his family so badly. He squeezed his eyes shut as the unwanted reminder seemed only to taunt him, leaving him feeling even more hollow then he already felt.

"You have to eat son." He took a seat beside his student, though he allowed a long moment of silence to pass between them before he did anything else, and then he only passed the mug to the younger man.

"It'll get easier, I know it doesn't seem like it now, but it will." He touched the towel where it still covered the mug, bringing it again to his student's attention.

"Everyday will be less painful, and one day it won't hurt at all." He touched Luka's shoulder, finishing the words as he stood.

"I know you can't see past what you feel now, but you will, trust me, now, eat your soup before it gets cold." He applied a brief squeeze of pressure before releasing the younger man's shoulder. He expected no response from him and was not disappointed as he was met by only more silence as he turned and left the room. It would take time, but, like those before him, and those to come after, life would go on, and the young man would go on, their future depended on it.

Title: Sleepless Night
Character/Pairing: Luka Kovac
Prompt: O6. General: Whisper
Word Count: 516
Rating: PG
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: Luka faces a sleepless night awaiting the jury's verdict in the Curtis Ames' case.
Disclaimer: Neither Goran Visnjic's image nor the character of Luka Kovac of ER belong to me. No copy-write infringement is intended by their use, they are being borrowed here strictly for entertainment purposes.

Luka shifted restlessly on the bed, turning from side to side, then crushing his pillow into a ball before rolling onto his stomach and wrapping his arms around it with a frustrated sigh. He was beyond exhausted but for whatever reason he couldn't seem to get to sleep, shifting again to his side, he propped his head on his palm as he watched Abby sleep, at least he wasn't keeping her awake.

"This is ridiculous." He voiced the words aloud in Croatian, though they were little more than a whisper, and even as he spoke he wondered for whose benefit the complaint was being made.

"I can't keep this up." Shoving the blankets aside he sat up and dropped his feet to the floor, there was no point in waking Abby, and if he kept on the way he was it wouldn't be long before he did just that.

"At least now you'll be able to get a decent night's sleep." He kept his words at a whisper as he re-covered Abby, then remained a moment longer simply watching her before leaving the room. The temptation at first was to go to Joe's room, but, he forced himself to resist it...how fair was it to his son for him to risk his waking him simply because he couldn't sleep? Instead he found himself in the kitchen and without a second thought he pulled a beer from the refrigerator and after twisting off the cap and tossing it in the sink, he carried it to the window.

It wasn't like he didn't know what was bothering him. He took a long pull off the bottle as his mind began to put the pieces together, waiting for the jury to bring back their verdict was taking it's toll, how could it not? Curtis Ames was constantly in his thoughts no matter what he was doing, and even now, as he stared out the window at this hour of the night he couldn't help but admit that he half expected to see the man standing there on the sidewalk staring back up at him.

Curtis Ames was yet another of those people who would invade his mind and force him to relive his actions over and over again. He would twist the truth, make him question his skills, doubt his abilities, drive him to the edge and challenge him to explain why he believed that he had done everything he should have done, despite the outcome. Tipping back the beer Luka savored the taste as it quenched his parched throat, and only as he lowered the bottle again did he finally accept the final inevitability of his internal battle with Curtis Ames.

Whatever the jury decided, however Curtis Ames or his family or the hospital itself saw what had happened to him, none of it will change what I did, or how I saw things, how I'm still seeing things. Guilty or innocent, the fact remains that for the rest of my life I have to live with what I did, and Curtis Ames knows that better then any of us ever will.

"It's never going to be easy for us is it?" Luka's words were the first to break the silence that had settled around the couple.

"I don't know." Abby shook her head as she answered, then reached over to run her fingers through Joe's hair. How was she going to do this without them?

"We can do this as a family, the three of us, you don't have to be alone." The fear of losing her was in his voice despite his effort to conceal it.

"No, I know what I said, but, it's not true, not in that way anyway." Abby paused, sniffing back tears she was determined not to shed.

" Abby, I know my being gone hasn't made things easy for you, we could go bury my father and then come back and work on this together." He was stopped by a shake of her head before he could finish.

"I would love to have you and Joe with me, but, I can't do it that way, I have to be the one to do this." She reached for one of the passenger's to Joe's plane, anything to keep her from seeing the hurt on her husband's face.

The room fell again into silence as Luka started to protest and then stopped himself, why did they have to face so many obstacles in their relationship?

"Can you put mama in the plane, Joe?" She handed the figure to her son before finally forcing her gaze back to her husband.

"Luka, please, tell me you understand." She brought her hand to rest on his as she made the request of him.

"I'm trying, Abby, I'm trying." He let his head drop so that it came to rest against hers, as the room once more fell silent except for the sound of Joe as he played in front of them.

"We'll miss you." His quiet words finally broke the silence, then a brief smile formed before he kissed her.

"I'll miss you too." Abby returned his kiss before settling against him to watch Joe play, drawing strength from Luka as his arm curled around her. No more lies, no more sneaking around, this was the beginning of the life they should have always had, the life they all deserved.

There was no escaping it now, it was inevitable, the thing he had most feared most was coming true. As he walked away from Louise's apartment door the full weight of the realization crashed down upon him. It was his own fault, all of his mistakes, his excesses had to have led to this. As he reached their apartment door he stopped, knowing even as he looked inside that he couldn't enter, there was too much of them inside, too many things of Abby's of Joe's. Without thought he let the blanket slip from his fingers and pool in the doorway, he couldn't stay here.

Luka turned away from the apartment in a daze, unable to even muster anger at Ames for what he was sure the man had done. He couldn't start over again, if they were gone, if somehow the man how thought to punish him by stripping his family from him the way he believed his own had been taken. He found himself on the sidewalk without even realizing how he had gotten there.

Where would he go? What would he do? What would it matter? His life was over, without Abby, without Joe...it had taken everything he had in him to start over after he'd lost Danijela, Jasna and Marko, there wasn't anything left to do it again. He was drained, empty, unable to even find tears to grieve for the loss of them now.

"Luka!" The sound of Abby's voice crept into the blackness and without daring to hope he found himself looking for the source.

"Luka, what are you doing?" Abby came down the sidewalk toward him, balancing Joe on one hip as she waved with her free hand.

"Abby." Her name was little more than a whisper on his lips, as fear kept him rooted to the spot where he stood. What if she wasn't really there? What if he was only imagining them?

"Luka, come take Joe." As Abby called to him again the spell seemed to break and swallowing his fear he forced his feet to move.

"Abby?" The fear lingered in his voice and as he reached them he couldn't help but wrap his arms around them, pulling the two of them close, thus assuring himself that they were real.

"I was afraid Ames had you, the blood..." Abby silenced him with a kiss.

"Luka, Shhh, I'm sorry, I should have called you, I cut myself, the closest thing was Joe's blanket, I didn't think, Luka, I'm so sorry." It was Abby's turn to hold him as relief washed over him, they were home, they were safe, and nothing else mattered.

What had he gotten them into? Hunched into himself with the rain soaking him to the skin, Luka couldn't help but begin to question the choices that had led him to this place, led them to this place. Why hadn't he gone back to Kisangani with Carter and the others? Why hadn't he allowed them to take these patients when they had taken all of the others? The questions were ones he had no answers for and ones he knew would haunt him as so many other things in his past haunted him. If only he could stop the shivering.

Lifting his head from his knees he looked around at those who had put their trust in him, how was he going to answer when asked what gave him the right to put so many at risk? The shirt that Patrique was trying to shield them with had long ago stopped offering any protection from the rain and if anything only made things worse. He was so cold, and the rain showed no signs of letting up anytime soon.

He dropped his head to his knees again before hugging them tightly in hopes of willing the shivering to stop. What was going to happen to them? Without access to medical treatment what hope did his patients have now? What had he done?

"Dr. Luka, let me give you the quinine." Patrique couldn't help but try again despite the multiple refusals he'd already received.

"No, I told you, save it for the boy." Luka lifted his head only long enough to do just that.

"Will you at least try to rest then?" Patrique's concern over the doctor's worsening condition was impossible for him to conceal.

"I'll try." As he made the concession, Patrique spread the shirt he'd been shielding them with on the ground next to Luka, offering him somewhere other then the mud to lay his head as he coaxed him to lie down.

He should be thinking of a way to get them all to safety, but he was so tired, maybe Patrique was right, if he rested for just a little while. Curling onto his side he tucked his hands between his knees and closed his eyes, maybe he would see things clearer after he had slept, maybe... The thought was lost as sleep claimed him.

Title: Sacrifices

"Tata, I'm hungry." The young girl draped herself across the desk her father was working on as she made the proclamation.

"Jasna, you know it's not time to eat yet, when dinner is ready Mama will tell you." Luka look up from the book he was reading as he answered her.

"But I'm hungry now..." Her request began to drift more toward a whine as she persisted.

"Jasna, you heard Tata, why don't you come help me fix dinner." Danijela's voice drifted across the small apartment from the kitchen where she was cutting vegetables for the evening meal as Marko sat in his highchair near her gnawing on a carrot.

"I don't want to help, I'm hungry NOW." Without thinking of the consequences the small girl stomped her foot to accentuate her demand causing her father to finally turn her full attention to her.

"That'll be enough of that, you're not starving, you can wait until Mama is done, now, go help or find something else to do until it's ready." He let his gaze lock on his daughter's as he spoke.

"I am too starving..." Her lip trembled as she attempted to push the issue, knowing even as she did that she was walking a very fine line.

"Come here Beba," Shifting in his chair, Luka motioned his daughter to him before pulling her onto his lap, what had she eaten for breakfast, for lunch? The questions moved quickly through his thoughts, he knew that rations had been tight but were things so bad that she would really be hungry enough to feel she were starving? The questions were ones he was almost afraid to know the answers to.

"Jasna, tell me the truth, are you really that hungry or are you just bored?" He brushed the dark curls off of her face as he questioned her, searching her face for the signs of hunger that he might have missed.

With her father's full attention now on her the five year old found it more difficult to exaggerate her condition and instead of immediately answering she released a long sigh.

"We only had bread for lunch, Tata, that was a long time ago." She leaned back against his chest, welcoming the time alone with him despite how it had come to be.

"I know, Jasna, I'm sorry, I wish there could have been more, but sometimes the market doesn't have very much to buy so we have to make what we have last longer, do you understand?" Even as he tried to make her see why things were the way they were, he hated having to do it, hated having to tell his five year old that she had to go hungry because there wasn't enough food.

"I understand, but I'm still hungry, Tata." As much as she wanted to be strong for him it was just too hard and as she finished the tears began to fall, leaving her father little to do except pull her into his arms as she cried her frustration out.

"It's all right, Beba, it's all right, I know you're trying..." How long would they have to keep doing this? The question was one he couldn't help asking himself as he held her, no more then he could stop blaming himself for them being here to begin with. Why hadn't they left when they'd had the chance? The questions were ones he knew he would continue to ask of himself until this was over and even after, and ones which he would most likely never have answers to. This was the path that had been chosen for them, these were the sacrifices they were being asked to make, this was God's plan for them, only time would tell where it might lead them.

Summary:Could Luka's greatest fear have come true?

It was no use, no matter who he had called the answer had been the same, no one had heard from Abby, no one had any idea where she and Joe might be. His worst fears were being confirmed. It was happening again. Even as the realization crystallized he could feel the tightening in his chest, feel the undeniable shortness of breath. If he wasn't a doctor and knew better Luka would almost swear he was having a heart attack. The rational part of his mind was telling him to call the police, to tell them about Ames, about the stalking, the threats, his fears, but, the irrational part of his mind was winning at the moment.

He snapped the cover of the phone closed and stalked to the door, the blood-stained baby blanket still clutched in his hand. As he reached Louise's door he pounded on it with enough forced that it reverberated around him.

"Luka, what is it?" The woman opened the door almost immediately, her face turning instantly to one of concern as she correctly read his expression.

"Louise, do you have Joe? Did Abby ask you to watch him?" His heart seized in those moments that it took for him to get the questions out and wait for her to answer.

"No, I'm sorry, I haven't seen Abby or Joe today, why, is something wrong?" Her eyes swept over him, then fixed on the blanket he held. "Luka, what is it...come inside." She reached for his arm only to have him jerk away.

"No, don't...I have to find them." He was already moving away as he refused. "I have to find them." He turned his back on the woman, his last hope for finding one or both of them safe now gone. It was happening again.

There had to be a reasonable explanation for where Abby and Joe were. Even as he stood there on the sidewalk clutching the blood stained blanket his mind was scrambling for some reason other than the one he'd first lept at. He'd call her, that would solve everything, she'd probably just taken him to the park. He could believe that, even if it didn't explain the blanket. Pulling out his cell phone he pushed the quick dial for Abby's phone. Breathe Luka, breathe. He voiced the reminder silently to himself as he listened to the ring, only to frown as he realized that he wasn't just hearing it through the phone he held to his ear.

"Oh God, no." It was all he could do to re-enter the apartment and realize that the dual ring was indeed coming from inside. Abby hadn't taken her phone, where would she have gone without it?

"Abby." He closed his own phone and re-pocketed it as he saw hers on the counter. She wouldn't have left willingly without it, would she? She'd have known he'd try to reach her. Already he could feel his heart starting to race, the worst case scenario already beginning to take root.

"No!" he wasn't going to give in to it...not yet, he couldn't give up on them. Think, think, his thoughts were becoming a tangled mess and the only thing he was sure of was that Abby and Joe were missing. What would she have done? She knew he was due home...think.

Her phone, that might be it, maybe the clue was in her phone, maybe she'd left it for a reason. He immediately reached for Abby's phone and punched redial, only to hear the answering ring of his own phone in response.

"Damn." He threw it across the room without thinking about the consequences.

"Abby, where are you?"

It hadn't helped telling Abby about Ames, if anything it seemed to only have made matters worse, and Luka found himself dreading leaving for work the following morning. He and Abby had sat up until early morning discussing what they could do to best handle Ames, if in fact he was stalking the family which Abby still fully doubted. There was no question now that they should stagger their shifts, neither of them would be able to concentrate on their patients if they knew the other weren't with Joe. So, it was he who had gone to work and Abby who was the one to stay home, spending the first day with Joe.

"Abby?" Even as he opened the door Luka felt the chill creep up his spine, something was wrong, instinctively he knew it the moment he stepped inside and the panic was immediate.

"Abby! Joe!" He dropped his briefcase and ran for the stairs, taking them two at a time only to find that room empty as well. They had to be here. Backtracking downstairs he stopped when he saw one of Joe's blankets laying balled up on the floor, as he picked it up he couldn't miss the blood that stained it and he felt his heart stop. Oh God, no.

"Abby! Joe!" He clutched the thin blanket in his hands as he ran for the door and back outside, stopping when he reached the sidewalk, his eyes scanning up one side and then down the other. This couldn't be happening, it was a nightmare, it had to be, oh god, please, let him wake up from it.

He had dreamt of this moment so many times, but he had never really thought he would see it come to pass, and now, here it was, here he was. Standing in the darkness with his newborn son in his arms Luka couldn't help thinking of his first two children, the two he had lost so many years before.

"Josip...Joe...do you know how much we wanted you? How much I wanted you? " He asked the questions in Croatian, knowing it would be the first of many such conversations the two of them would have.

"Do you know what a lucky boy you are, to be wanted so much?" His brushed the fine black bangs off the boy's forehead only to find the image of another child coming to his thoughts with the act.

"You look so much like your brother did at your age." Tears formed as he made the comparison, knowing as he did that one would never know the other.

"His name was Marko...do you remember me telling you about him in the hospital, and about your big sister Jasna? I wish you could have a chance to know them, that they could know you, but they went away a long time ago." He lifted a hand to wipe away his tears as he spoke.

"I want you to know about them. I need you to know who they were and what they were like." He moved over to the rocker and took a seat, then settled his son in the crook of his arm before offering him the bottle that sat on the table beside it.

"I want to tell you about Marko's sense of humor, and how Jasna loved to dance. They had a different mama then you do, she's with them now, taking care of them so they won't be alone. Her name was Danijela, I told you about her too, about how beautiful she was. She loved to sing to Jasna and Marko, she would sing them to sleep with lullabies, I wish you could hear her sing, not like tata sings to you. They're in heaven now, and they're your angels Joe, the ones who watch over you when mama and tata can't, like when you're sleeping, so you never have to be afraid. "You're such a lucky boy to have so many people to love you and watch over you." Leaning his head down, he shifted the bottle enough that he could place a kiss on his son's forehead as he finished speaking.

"You are such a lucky boy, Joe, but, not as lucky as I am, because you've given me the chance to be that one thing I never thought I would ever be again. This is the beginning of so much for you. I won't disappoint you Joe...I promise you that.

It was quiet in the NICU, well not exactly quiet, but quieter than it was during the daytime, or during the regular visiting hours in the hospital. Now though it was relatively empty, at close to 3 in the morning most of the parents had gone home long ago, or found places to sleep, but not him, not tonight.

As he stood over his newborn son Luka couldn't stop the fear that lurked inside him. What if he were asked to give this son up as he had been asked to give up his first son and daughter? The thought was one he didn't want to think about but still it returned.

Laying his hands face down on the incubator he closed his eyes, he knew what he had to do, despite his doubts he had to take the chance, not for himself, not even for Abby, but for Joe.

He whispered the prayer quietly, the words ones that had brought comfort to him as a child. Ones he had turned from when his family had been lost. Ones he had found his way back to as he thought his own life about to end. As he finished he caressed the case as he would have the small boy's skin.

"Joe...my little boy...you have to fight, for mama, for me." He brought his hand to his lips, afraid that if he lost the hold he had on his emotions he might not get it back.

"You have your own angels Joe, did you know that?" He sniffed back the tears before they could start.

"Your big sister, Jasna, your brother Marko, they'll always be with you, watching over you, making sure you're safe. Can you see them?" A smile tugged at his lips as the image of just that appeared to him.

"They'll always be there for you baby, all you have to do is look for them, you'll never be alone, not even when tata and mama are somewhere else." He swiped his hand over his face as the tears finally broke.

"You have another angel Joe, a beautiful angel who will love you as much as we do, her name is Danijela. She'll hold you, and sing to you, and keep you safe from harm. You never have to be afraid, Joe, so sleep, and get strong, and we'll take care of the rest.
